Why August Is the Most Dangerous Month for a Growing Business
Every founder I know has a favorite month.
Q4, when the momentum is undeniable. January, when everyone resets and gets serious. Launch week, when the whole company is running on adrenaline.
Almost nobody picks August.
August doesn't have the energy of a launch or the urgency of year-end. It's the month where things are... fine. Steady. Nothing's on fire.
And that's exactly why I think it's the most dangerous month in business.
THE QUIET MONTHS ARE WHERE COMPANIES DRIFT
When a business is in crisis, everyone pays attention. Problems get fixed fast because they have to be.
But when a business is coasting, that urgency disappears.
Meetings get shorter. Decisions get slower. "We'll revisit that in the fall" becomes the answer to everything.
Drift doesn't announce itself. It doesn't show up in the numbers right away. It shows up months later, when you realize the small things you let slide in August are the big things you're scrambling to fix in November.
COMFORT IS A LAGGING INDICATOR
One thing I remind our team constantly: feeling comfortable is not the same as being on track.
Comfort is often just a lagging indicator of decisions you made a while ago. It doesn't tell you much about where you're headed.
The businesses that stay sharp treat the quiet months with the same discipline as the loud ones. Same standards. Same follow-through. Same attention to the details nobody's checking on.
That's harder than it sounds, because nothing is forcing you to do it.
WHAT WE DO DURING THE SLOW STRETCH
At MightyMeals, we treat slower months as an audit, not a break.
It's when we look hardest at our systems — sourcing, production, customer experience — because we actually have the bandwidth to look closely instead of just reacting.
It's when we ask the questions that get skipped during the busy stretches: Is this still working? Would we build it this way if we were starting today? What have we been avoiding?
Those questions are easy to postpone when things feel urgent. August is when we make time for them.
DISCIPLINE WHEN NO ONE'S WATCHING
I've said before that great companies are built during ordinary days. August might be the most ordinary month there is.
No one's watching. No milestone is coming due. It would be easy to let the foot off the gas.
But that's the test. Not whether you can perform under pressure — most people can. It's whether you can hold the same standard when there isn't any.
The founders who pass that test quietly are usually the ones who look like they got lucky a year later.
They didn't get lucky. They just didn't take the quiet months off.
